 In addition, we discussed when she moved to Ghana in 2012 and consequently became the author of "Move to Ghana: 10 Practical ways to move to the Motherland, to help “address questions” from those willing to relocate but uncertain about what awaits them. The knowledge is therefore to help them plan and prepare before they move.

Ghana tops 9 Most Expensive African Countries to Rent a 1 Bed Apartment (On Ratios) | PodBites Ep. 26

Business Insider Africa shows that Ghana is amongst the list of 9 African countries which are the most expensive places to rent in Africa. 
This list is courtesy of Numbeo, the largest cost of living database in the world.. Those of you who have been following Season 3, we dropped an episode last year called “Is Accra Expensive”,  where Numbeo also reported that Accra is the 2nd most expensive city in the world,  which we debated of course.
So this list is based on property price to income ratio basically comparing the median household price within an area to the median household income. 
Owning a property and renting in Africa has never been more expensive in such a climate where people flocking to Africa are pushing up the prices and coincidently, pricing out some of the natives who just can’t afford it. The gap between the rich, middle class and poor is getting wider.
We review in this episode, all the 9 countries on this list, including Ghana, based on the average salary per country and the going rate for a 1 bedroom apartment in each nations's capital.

Ghana E-Levy Passed: The Final Whistle & What Next? | PodBites Ep. 21

Tuesday 29th March was a bittersweet day Ghanaian Citizen. 
Ghana qualified for the World Cup 2022 and had the upper hand in the classic Jollof  Derby.  They also  celebrated the birthday of the President of the Republic of Ghana, none other than H.E Nana Akuffo-Addo.  On this same day, the E-levy was passed.
The Tax levy was recently reduced from 1.75% to 1.5%. There were hopes this would eventually be reduced to 0%. Others hoped this E-levy would get approved, which has been the eventuality.

Ghanaian Cedis currency at an all time low, Gas and inflation at all time high - PodBites Ep. 20 ( The Sound of Accra Podcast Mini-Series)

On Tuesday 15th march 2022, The Pound Sterling Passed the 10 Ghanaian Cedis mark briefly, meaning £1  converted to just over 10 Ghanaian Cedis. This is an all time low for the Ghanaian Cedis currency. Meanwhile, Gas prices are at an all time high, with diesel prices going past the 10 cedis mark also.
I released an episodes called the state of Ghana’s economy, Q4-2021, where I hinted that the Ghanaian economy was on a downwards spiral with inflation rising every week:

An interesting tweet has resurfaced by President Nana Akuffo-Addo, who tweeted on 4th May 2016: “The current depreciation of the Ghana Cedis against the US dollar is because of bad leadership. We should not be where we are today to buy the dollar for 3.72 cedis. Vote for Change #changenow"
Bloomberg has published that the ghana Cedi is now one of the worst performing currency among Africa’s top currencies.

Ghana wants to increase tax revenues by adding a levy on mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances.

Is Accra Expensive? x Young Ghanaian Professionals (YGP) UK | S3 Ep. 4

A research article on Numbeo ranked Accra, Ghana's capital, second most expensive city in the world with regard to property price ratio. It also ranked Accra for lowest loan affordability. We debate this on today's episode.
Numbeo also revealed that Accra has the world’s highest Mortgage percentage income ratio, followed closely by Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Tehran (Iran) in second and third place, respectively.
Mortgage as Percentage of Income is a ratio of the actual monthly cost of the mortgage to take-home family income.
“Average monthly salary is used to estimate family income. It assumes 100% mortgage is taken on 20 years for the house (or apt) of 90 square meters which price per square meter is the average price in the city centre and outside of city centre,” the site explained.

Bolt dethrones Uber to lead Ride-Hailing for Accra and Ghana? | Ride Share Wars | PodBites Ep. 13

Ghana Investment Summit & The Diaspora | PodBites Ep. 6

"The New Normal" and the "Diaspora Investment" was the theme of the Ghana investment summit in June 2021, held at Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel in Accra, hosted by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre. 
The concept behind the event was to bridge the gap between the diaspora and Ghanaians around the world in the realms of business, trade and investment, with the hopes of building back a better Ghana. This event was streamed on YouTube including YouTube Channels Wode Maya and showcased Diaspora-owned businesses who also were raising investment. 
A range a of speakers were announced for the event including  Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Tourism and Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister of Foreign Affairs. 
 The theme of the two-day event was :  “Grow in Ghana , Grow with Ghana”.

Ghana to become new Tech capital in West Africa | Ghana Gov to introduce Digital Cedi CBDC  | PodBites Ep.5

Twitter recently made Ghana their headquarters despite most jobs on offer targeting Nigerians. However, this could all change if they are forced to change their strategy to cope with recent restrictions placed by the Nigerian Government. In addition, Ghana is far in developments with its own digital currency, the digital Cedi, and seems to have made a head start in becoming one of the first African countries to launch their own central bank digital currency, which could change everything in the business and Technology landscape not just in the country itself, but also across the African continent.

Ghanaian Entrepreneurs to rescue Ghana housing deficit | Let’s build Ghana together #fixthecountry | PodBites Ep.4

Ghana’s housing sector right now is in a state of emergency and needs entrepreneurs who understand Ghana to bring innovation in the country to help create housing opportunities, make better use of land and create more accessibility to project funds.
Ghana currently has a two-million-housing unit deficit. What this is means is that the prices of house have gone up in value because of the lack of homes available. People all over the world, including the diaspora from Europe and America are now flocking to Ghana, and this may also contributed to an unexpected shortage of homes in the country. One of the issues here is that because of the discrepancy between the average income earner in Ghana and the prices of houses, a big unafforadbility gap has been created, and so there is a need for more cheaper homes that the low-income earner in Ghana can afford. 
One way of tackling this shortage of affordable homes for average earners, has been the Ghana’s Government’s affordable housing scheme. According Joy Online, To achieve a minimum of 170 thousand housing units annually, which is the Governments target, the cost of housing construction has to be reduced.  
One way the Government has looked to achieve this has been by collaborating with private developers and entrepreneurs on a partnership basis. So for instance, according to Joy online, the Government can secure the land for the private developer for construction, or as alternative, the Government can pay for the roads to be done around a development or source cheaper construction materials to subsidise the cost of development for the private developer.
Recently, Kofi Anku, The developer behind the Ayi Mensah Park project in Ghana,  appeared on YouTuber Vanessa Kanbi’s channel whilst on a new construction site and explained how construction materials are increasing in the country, and as a result, they are having to pass that additional cost to the end user of the property. A market survey showed a bag of cement selling at GHS38 in 2020, has increased to GHS48 and GHS50 depending on the retailer.  The aftermath of the pandemic and general inflation, is clearly having an impact on the Government closing the gap in the housing deficit.
According to housing finance Africa dot org, Before the pandemic, Ghana’s economic growth positioned the country as one of the Africa’s six economies leading the world’s 10 fastest growing economies. Many Ghanaians prefer to build and own their houses incrementally which accounts for the widespread horizontal development. Access to affordable housing for the majority of households is a challenge and the pandemic has affected the level of household incomes for formally and informally employed workers. The pandemic has further impacted the Ghanaian construction industry and engagements with investors focused on affordable housing delivery.

Ghana is set to welcome Jeff Bezos' Amazon to African shores | PodBites Ep.3

Ghanaweb.com and allafrica.com , two reputable african media news sources are reporting that Amazon is set to hit Ghanaian shores very soon as an introduction to the african e-commerce marketplace.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has assured the nation that the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) is working to ensure that Amazon.com establishes its head office in Ghana just as Twitter has done.
Would this move wipe out the efforts of key e-commerce players in Ghana such as Maxmartonline, which also has a chain of physical stores across Accra, Zoobashop and of course Jumia Ghana?

Crypto Craze hits Ghana and Accra | Bitcoin Bonanza sweeps Africa | PodBites Ep.2

Cryptocurrency transactions are starting to pick up across Africa. In early 2021, you’ve may companies like Tesla have invested billions into Bitcoin.  And more payment systems like Visa, PayPal and Mastercard are following suit.  Music Artist Akon even has his very own cryptocurrency, Akoin, which is a cryptocurrency which is designed to be used in all 54 countries in Africa, now available on a few Crypto exchanges.
Meanwhile, more Ghanaians getting involved in the Cyptocurrency craze now sweeping Africa as they look for new ways to make an income, and there are an increasing number of exchanges and brokers being established for buying and selling cryptocurrencies. With Binance and Coinbase, two of the biggest crypto exchanges out there, being available in Ghana, this has now become a whole lot widespread, There are many other exchanges, including Ghanaian and African based ones including Bitpesa, eBitcoinics, Bundle Africa, Sikaplus, PayPlux and so many others. The next step is for Africa remittance platforms such as Chipper Cash App to integrate crypto into their strategy to stay relevant to the contemporary financial market. 
Cryptocurrency is an encrypted digital currency built on blockchain technology, and decentralised and unregulated by Financial institutions and centrals banks. 
Jack Dorsey met bitcoin business owners in Ghana in 2019 and plans to integrate bitcoin use on Twitter, and has already done with his other company Square, by integrating the ability to buy bitcoin on CashApp.

Jack Dorsey to stay in Ghana for 6 months | Twitter Africa HQ will be in Accra | PodBites Ep.1

Ghana Twitter staff are reporting the Jack Dorsey moving to Ghana to June for 6 months.
Jack Dorsey has previously visited Ghana and spoken at a few events and meetups.
Last year, Jack Dorsey discussed the usage of Bitcoin in Africa, and is a big fan of the cryptocurrency having integrated the ability to purchase bitcoin on the CashApp (another one of his companies). He even attended a Bitcoin meetup in Ghana. The Tech Tycoon who recently purchased the music streaming service Tidal for almost half a billion dollars, wants to make Accra his main home in Africa whilst travelling the rest of the continent.

The move of Twitter establishing themselves in Ghana was a welcome prospect by the Ghanaian President Nana Akuffo-Addo, who tweeted “The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is excellent news. Government and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country,” 
There’s also some hope that some of Jack’s other wealthy business pals would also be inspired to visit Ghana and perhaps establish a base of their own here.
With most of the world working remotely or from home, The Twitter job market will be even more open with Africans all over the continent likely to apply for the role. In addition, this may create opportunities for Twitter to outsource some roles to non-Ghanaians. As much as  Twitter’s move to Ghana has been widely celebrated, you could argue there has been some controversial discussions on how much this move will actually Benefit Ghanaians themselves.
When twitter opens, they plan to engage with Tech Hubs in Ghana that they already have relationships .Ghanaian tech entrepreneurs and specialists have been encouraged to apply for these jobs based in Ghana.

Adrian has worked for UBS Investment bank at 22, was in New York as part of the Mountbatten Internship scheme after graduating university in Birmingham where he studied Business Studies. Since then Adrian has been a Financial Consultant where he has worked internationally for the largest Investment Banks, Consultancy Practices and Payment companies in the world such as RBS, Accenture, HSBC, Visa, Bloomberg and Deloitte.

Now Adrian has moved on to be a Financial Protection Advisor where he offers advice to clients on their protection needs such as life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection, family income benefit and business insurance. He’s also involved in the property investing field.

Beyond The Return: Ghana in a COVID 19 Era ( Africa Roundtable, Vol 2 )

Ghana quickly became one of the African countries with the most Coronavirus cases. It also became one of the top countries to fight against the virus outbreak. The Ghanaian Government took no chances in dealing with the menace. 
Today, Ghana is almost on the verge of a 2nd wave of the virus sweeping the nation, with currently just under 50,000 cases and remarkably only 350 deaths to date.
On 1st September, Ghana re-opened its international airport, Kotoka International Airport, and resumed commercial flights, and since the summer of 2020, the country has seen some kind of normal again, including restaurants, bars, tourist sites and public events all back on again, with the exception of beaches, nightclubs and cinemas still closed. However, things aren’t quite the same as they were back in March in Ghana, and I decided to catch up with a few travellers and contacts of mine from different backgrounds and industries, to explore how their professional and personal lives have been affected by this outbreak.
